Here are some of my recent drawings. Although these do not tie in to my MetGrow theme, I thought it appropriate to show them alongside my other past work. Some were commissioned, some were just for fun!
My name is Jenna and I am in the final year of my Fine Art Painting Degree at Camberwell college of Art, London.
I am using this blog as a means of sharing my progress through the development of my final degree project which will be represented in the form of a website: www.metgrow.co.uk and and exhibition.
Throughout my three year degree, my work has developed by focusing on the subtle yet persistent manifestation of nature in the urban environment, in this case, LONDON. For example, my paintings depict night scenes of lonely streets or houses. However the composition is such that the viewer is forced to muddle through winding branches and trees in order to discover the buildings beyond.
I enjoy juxtaposing urban and rural visual language: Barns in the Lake District are drawn with office stationary, wildflowers found on rural roads are scanned on to cheap office paper and soil from the green fields of the country serves as stuffing for office chairs which bleeds out of the fabric when exhibited indoors.
...quite conceptual you may agree!
Recently, I have been working outside the studio space; organising events and talks which approach this concept from a more socially engaged angle.
My latest event, "MetGro", held on the 20th March 2009, involved office workers in the advertising agency JWT in Knightsbridge, planting live seed-infused Metro newspapers to create a wildflower garden on their roof terrace overlooking Harrods. There is now a greenhouse installation in situ where the seeds from the newspapers have germinated and little plants are growing like crazy in this spring weather!
The Metro newspaper served as a metaphor for representing modern urban living - the stressful cramped commute into the city, the easy to read, bite-size news articles and this 'throw-away culture' which causes London's public transport to be littered with thousands of crumpled, disregarded newspapers on a daily basis.
All of the documentation of my event as well as YouTube interviews with like minded Londoners who share a passion for gardening in the city, and a facebook page, will be going on to a live website which I am building at the moment. This will be up and running for my final degree show in June.
I hope that this blog will both allow members of the public to comment on my work which I will be showing here, to engage with it, express opinions but will also to allow me to share my thoughts and processes along the way!
